History of the Breed
The Miniature American Shepherd originated in the United States during the late 1960s when breeders began selecting smaller Australian Shepherds while maintaining the breed’s intelligence, working ability, and structure.
These smaller dogs became popular with horse owners and ranchers who wanted a more compact working dog that still retained the characteristics of the Australian Shepherd.
Over time, the breed developed into a distinct population and eventually gained recognition through the American Kennel Club in 2015 as the Miniature American Shepherd.

Temperament and Personality
Miniature American Shepherds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and eagerness to work. As a herding breed, they are naturally alert and attentive to their environment. My own dogs tend to be fairly affectionate with the people they are closest to. Typical temperament traits include:
- Intelligent and trainable with a strong desire to learn
- Loyal velcro dogs who want to be with their people
- Active with moderate to high energy levels
- Alert and observant
- Some protective instincts are common in the breed

Size and Physical Traits
The Miniature American Shepherd is a small to medium-sized herding dog with balanced proportions, athletic movement, moderate length coat, and moderate bone structure. I believe that a Mini American Shepherd should resemble a small version of a classic Australian Shepherd.
In regard to size, our breed standard with the American Kennel Club specifies:
Height
Males: 14–18 inches at the shoulder
Females: 13–17 inches at the shoulder
Weight
While weight varies depending on structure, pedigree, genetics, and build, most Miniature American Shepherds weigh between 20–40 pounds.
** Size can greatly depend on genetics and the pedigree of the dog. I personally lean toward pedigrees with authentic Australian Shepherd ancestry to keep quality and temperament. Because of this my lines sometimes produce bigger dogs. I also measure height of puppies and compare to adult heights when given the opportunity.

Coat Colors and Markings
One of the most recognizable features of the Miniature American Shepherd is its unique and beautiful coat and striking color patterns. There are many coat and eye colors that are within breed standard. The most commonly seen coat colors include:

Exercise Requirements
Energy level can vary greatly depending on breeding program or from one puppy to another in the same litter. Generally, this breed is fairly active and is most often considered a medium to higher energy breed. Miniature American Shepherds thrive best when given both physical exercise and mental stimulation. Activities they often enjoy include:
- Hiking and outdoor adventures
- Training sessions such as obedience and tricks
- Enrichment activities at home like puzzle feeders
- Dog sports such as agility and obedience

Grooming and Shedding
Miniature American Shepherds have a moderate-length double coat designed to protect them in various weather conditions. Regular grooming helps maintain coat health and manage shedding and matting. Generally, seasonal coat shedding happens twice a year. Typical grooming needs include:

The Miniature American Shepherd is generally a healthy breed, often living 12-15 years old.
With that in mind it is important to understand the Miniature American Shepherd, like many purebred dogs, can carry certain inherited conditions. Double Merle:
One very important thing to mention about Mini Americans and Australian Shepherds, no matter big or small, is the possibility of a double merle genotype. If a merle patterned Aussie were to mate with another merle patterned Aussie (no matter what color), there is a 25% chance that their offspring would be homozygous for a merle patterned coat. The phenotype for this genotype is shown to have excessive white and a high chance that the pup is blind and/or deaf or a number or other genetic issues. Many of these pups are euthanized or rejected and sent to rescues because of this. They require very special care, training, and love.
